President’s Muhammadu Buhari’s personal assistant to new media, Bashir Ahmad tweeted about the decision of Benin Republic to withdraw its nomination for the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) as reported by This Day Newspaper. It was also included in the tweet that the withdrawal was in support of Nigeria’s nominee, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
It was also reported that the Permanent Minister of the Republic of Benin to the United Nations Office and other International Organizations based in Geneva, Switzerland released a letter containing this information. The letter also revealed that the decision was informed by consultations conducted by three African countries who agreed that one candidate from Africa should be endorsed for the post of the Director-General of the World Trade Organization within 2021 – 2025.
