Prime Video has replaced Ryan Hurst as Kratos in its upcoming “God of War” series after the actor suffered an injury during production.

Hurst had already started work on the show and appeared in a first-look image released in February. However, an on-set injury in June forced the production team to make a major change.

The recasting means a new actor will take over the lead role. The production team will also reshoot scenes that featured Hurst as Kratos.

Production Faces Setback

The injury has disrupted filming on the highly anticipated adaptation of the popular PlayStation franchise. Prime Video has not commented on the development.

Hurst already has a connection to the “God of War” universe. He voiced Thor in the hit video game “God of War: Ragnarok.”

Despite the setback, Prime Video hopes to resume production by mid-fall once it finds a replacement for the role.

Who Is Kratos?

The official description of the character states: “Kratos is Spartan by birth, and a god by nature. Raised in a martial culture, he rose to command armies in the service of his homeland until one day he made a fateful deal with Ares, the Greek God of War and lost his soul in exchange for being victorious in battle.”

Kratos stands at the centre of the series. The story follows his journey with his young son, Atreus.

Story Based on Popular Games

The show adapts the story from the two most recent “God of War” games.

According to the official logline, “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”

Callum Vinson stars as Atreus. Other cast members include Max Parker, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, Mandy Patinkin, Alastair Duncan, Danny Woodburn, Jeff Gulka and Ed Skrein.

Amazon has already ordered two seasons of the series. Ronald D. Moore serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.
