The Pokémon franchise is returning to the big screen with “Pokémon: Wild Card,” a new animated movie set for worldwide release in 2027, with a first teaser introducing a trading card game player and the ghostly Pokémon Mimikyu.
The movie was announced during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco. Alongside the announcement, fans received a brief teaser offering their first look at the upcoming project.
The teaser centres on a mysterious trading card game player wearing a yellow hoodie resembling Mimikyu. The ghost and fairy-type Pokémon was first introduced in “Sun” and “Moon,” the seventh-generation games in the Pokémon franchise.
Mimikyu is known for disguising itself as Pikachu, the franchise’s iconic mascot. However, its true appearance remains hidden beneath the yellow rag it wears.
“Pokémon: Wild Card” will be directed by Katsuhiko Kitada, whose previous credits include anime productions such as “The First Slam Dunk,” “Attack on Titan” and “Naruto: Shippuden.” Akemi Hayashi, known for her work on “Banana Fish” and “Lazarus,” is handling character design.
Japanese animation studio CloverWorks will produce the movie. The studio is behind popular anime titles including “Spy X Family” and “Bocchi the Rock.”
“Wild Card” marks the first Pokémon movie since 2020’s “Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle.” The film was released theatrically in Japan before arriving worldwide on Netflix in 2021.
The most recent Pokémon movie to receive a worldwide theatrical release was 2018’s “Pokémon the Movie: The Power of Us,” which had a limited release outside Japan through Fathom Events.
