The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike following the abduction of students and teachers in Ogbomoso.

The attack happened on Friday, May 15, 2026. Gunmen stormed three schools in the Yawota and Ahoro-Esinele areas of Oriire Local Government Area. They abducted 46 people, including 39 pupils and seven teachers.
The union said it decided because teachers and students no longer feel safe in schools. NUT leaders urged the government to act quickly and improve security across the state.
They said teachers cannot continue to work in an environment where criminals can attack schools without fear. The union also called on security agencies to rescue the victims and arrest those responsible for the attack.
According to the union, the strike will continue until authorities introduce stronger measures to protect schools. It stressed that the safety of teachers and pupils must come first.
The action has disrupted learning in many public schools across Oyo State. Thousands of pupils and students now remain at home as teachers stay away from classrooms.
Parents have expressed concern over the situation. Many have urged the government to strengthen security and restore confidence in the education system.
