Super Eagles striker, Taiwo Awoniyi, recently trended on social media after his cameo performance for his premier side helped Nottingham Forest defeat high-flying Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Taiwo Awoniyi has been at Nottingham Forest since moving from Union Berlin in 2022 but has had a tough time hacking it in the English Premier League (EPL).
The Nigerian striker got a cameo performance for Nottingham Forest in their game against Wolves and finally scored his first goal of the 2024/2025 EPL season. After scoring, images of Taiwo Awoniyi being moved to tears as he celebrated his first goal in 324 days have gone viral.
Awoniyi last scored a goal for Nottingham Forest last February in the 2023/2024 season in a 2-0 win over West Ham United.
The Nigerian striker had been reduced to a bit-part role this season due to the impressive form of Chris Wood, who has netted 12 goals for Forest. However, Awoniyiโs goal marked a timely return to the scoresheet as his team went level on points with Arsenal in second place.
This goal brings Awoniyiโs total Premier League goals to 17, moving him ahead of Odion Ighalo (16) into 11th place on Nigeriaโs all-time top scorersโ list in the English Premier League.
In addition to Awoniyiโs contribution, his compatriot Olaย Ainaย continued his excellent form for Nottingham Forest, making his 20th consecutive Premier League start. Aina has been a key performer in Forestโs defence, helping them secure their sixth consecutive league win.
Nottingham Forestโs six-match winning streak is the longest of any team in the Premier League this season. This victory also marked their first six-match winning run in the top flight since 1967, and their best since 1979. The win pushed Forest into third place in the Premier League, level on points with second-placed Arsenal, and four points ahead of fourth-placed Chelsea, strengthening their hopes of a top-four finish.
