Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as ‘Ogogo’, has died at the age of 66 following a battle with stage four cancer.
Jide Kosoko, a fellow Nollywood actor and close associate of Ogogo, confirmed his death to TheCable Lifestyle on Sunday.
Seun Oloketuyi, a Nollywood film producer, also disclosed that the actor will be buried by 10 am on Monday.
The burial prayer will be held at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion in Ogogo’s hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State.
Ogogo’s death comes a week after his daughters announced that he was battling stage four cancer.
The family disclosed that the condition was discovered just three weeks before the announcement and had affected the actor’s abdomen.
His daughters also revealed that some medical institutions had said they could no longer conduct chemotherapy on him. They subsequently appealed to the public for recommendations on other possible treatment options for their father.
Ogogo was regarded as one of the veterans of the Yoruba section of Nollywood, having built a career spanning more than four decades across theatre and film.
He began acting in 1981 while working as an auto-mechanic at the Lagos State Water Corporation. However, he eventually left the job to focus fully on acting in 1994.
The actor rose to prominence after featuring in Owo Blow, the 1996 home-video hit directed by Tade Ogidan.
He subsequently appeared in hundreds of movies during his more than 40 years in the Nigerian entertainment industry.
His death marks the loss of one of the prominent figures who helped shape Yoruba-language cinema and the wider Nollywood industry.
