Nigeria’s #NoBankingDay Leads Boycott Of Banks Over Exorbitant Bank Charges

Hundreds of Nigerians are campaigning with the hashtag #NoBankingDay as a boycott of Nigerian banks commenced this morning.

For most bank account holders, a multitude of trumped up charges has made operating a bank account a nightmare. Banks keep coming up with ways to debit their customers; ATM maintenance fee, a VAT charged at the end of the financial year as well as the most recent N50 stamp charge on current accounts. The worst offender is arguably GTB, inciting a rash of complaints in December after arbitrary deductions from the accounts of several customers.

Some of the campaigners have led picketers to some branches of Nigerian banks and have urged customers to boycott banks today.

What is your take on #NoBankingDay?
