Nigerians Abroad Jam To Eedris Abdulkareem’s ‘Tell Your Papa’ After NBC Ban

A video of some Nigerians living abroad dancing to “Tell Your Papa” by Eedris Abdulkareem became viral online, causing social media users to react.

Despite the National Broadcasting Commission’s (NBC) recent prohibition on the song, it seems to have become even more popular.

“Tell Your Papa” was previously deemed unsuitable for broadcasting by NBC, which placed it in the “Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB)” category.

The commission said in a circular dated April 9, 2025, written by Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring Susan Obi, that the tune was in violation of section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which forbids the airing of anything considered offensive or indecent on public venues.

Nevertheless, it appears that the prohibition does not extend beyond Nigeria’s boundaries.

The now-viral video shows a group of Nigerians living overseas dancing fervently to the song, singing along, and taking in the music during what looks to be a laid-back get-together.

Online discussions have been sparked by the occurrence; some have praised the expatriate community for exercising their right to enjoy the song, while others have questioned the ban’s efficacy and intent in the digital age.

The popularity of “Tell Your Papa” keeps rising in spite of NBC’s position, as many people view it as a way to express or protest censorship.
