Nigeria Prioritises Food Security with New Agricultural Initiatives

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to improving food security through the introduction of innovative strategies aimed at boosting agricultural productivity and mechanization.

Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Abdullahi, emphasized this commitment during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday.

He outlined the governmentโ€™s efforts to address challenges in the agricultural sector, declaring food security a central focus under the administrationโ€™s Renewed Hope Agenda.

โ€œRevitalizing a struggling system requires extensive effort,โ€ Abdullahi stated.

โ€œAt the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, we recognize the critical importance of food security. Last year, the President declared a state of emergency on food security due to alarming numbers, underscoring the urgency of this issue.

โ€Abdullahi noted that food security is essential not just for ensuring adequate nutrition for Nigerians but also for fostering economic growth, alleviating poverty, and advancing gender inclusivity.

โ€œUnder the Renewed Hope Agenda, food security is a top priority in the agricultural sector, forming the backbone of Nigeriaโ€™s economy. It plays a vital role in poverty reduction and gender empowerment,โ€ he said.

To address long standing issues in agriculture, Abdullahi revealed that the government is focusing on transitioning Nigerian farmers from traditional practices to mechanized farming.

โ€œWe identified the rudimentary tools used by farmers as a major hurdle. Mechanization is key, and we are launching robust programs like the Greener Up Initiative Mechanization Programme in partnership with Belarus and the Greener Imperative Project with Brazil,โ€ he explained.

The Greener Imperative Project is set to launch in January 2025, following directives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Abdullahi described the initiative as a transformative step to modernize Nigeriaโ€™s agricultural sector by introducing advanced machinery.

โ€œThe President has issued a directive for the Greener Imperative Project to commence in January 2025,โ€ Abdullahi said. โ€œThis program will revolutionize farming, boost food production, reduce dependence on outdated methods, and enhance the sectorโ€™s overall efficiency.โ€

By addressing systemic inefficiencies and promoting modernization, the government aims to position agriculture as a cornerstone of national development while ensuring a secure and sustainable food supply for Nigerians.
