Nicholas Hoult will play Gilderoy Lockhart in the second season of HBO’s “Harry Potter” series, Variety has learned from sources.
The series will debut on Dec. 25 on HBO and HBO Max. Its first season will adapt “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.” HBO has already renewed the show for a second season based on “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
Lockhart plays a key role in “Chamber of Secrets.” He is a famous wizard who writes books about his supposed heroic acts. He also has a reputation for being vain and arrogant.
Lockhart joins Hogwarts as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. However, he soon shows that he lacks the skills needed for the job.
Kenneth Branagh played Lockhart in the 2002 film version of “Chamber of Secrets.”
Hoult joins another major franchise with the role. He played Dr Hank McCoy/Beast in several “X-Men” films. He now plays Lex Luthor in James Gunn’s DC Studios films.
Hoult first played Luthor in “Superman” in 2025. He will return as the character in “Man of Tomorrow” in 2027.
The actor has also appeared in “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Nosferatu,” “Juror #2,” “The Menu” and “Renfield.” He earned an Emmy nomination and two Golden Globe nominations for his role in the Hulu series “The Great.”
Filming for “Harry Potter” Season 2 will begin this fall. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, while Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout play Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
