New York City Named World’s No. 1 City in 2026 Global Cities Index

New York City tops the 2026 Global Cities Index, earning first place among 1,000 major cities assessed by Oxford Economics. 2026 Global Cities Index ranks New York ahead of London and Paris, which occupy second and third positions this year.

Oxford Economics evaluates cities across Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance to produce one single overall score. New York recorded a perfect 100.0 overall score, matching its first-place Economics score within the 2026 global ranking overall today.

Its Human Capital score reached 89.5, reflecting the city’s strong talent base, universities, workforce and ability to attract skilled workers. Meanwhile, New York scored 80.8 for Quality of Life, covering wellbeing, income, health outcomes, amenities and broader liveability factors overall.

The city received 72.8 for Environment, measuring environmental quality, sustainability, resilience and exposure to climate-related risks across the metropolitan area. Governance earned New York a score of 75.7, reflecting institutional strength, regulatory quality, stability and government effectiveness across institutions today.

According to Oxford Economics, New York’s leading position largely reflects the enormous size of its economy and strong labour market. The city has the world’s largest metropolitan economy, nearly twice the size of Tokyo’s and Los Angeles’ economies combined respectively.

Beyond economic scale, New York benefits from corporate headquarters, renowned universities, diverse industries and strong talent attraction capabilities globally today. Oxford Economics also notes that European and North American cities dominate the highest positions across the 2026 global rankings overall.

Seven American cities appear inside the global top ten, alongside London, Paris, Dublin and Tokyo among leading international urban centres. New York therefore combines economic strength with human capital, quality of life, environmental performance and governance in one comprehensive assessment.

The index provides businesses, governments and investors with a standardized framework for comparing major urban economies and their prospects globally. Oxford Economics describes the ranking as forward-looking, using forecasts alongside standardized qualitative datasets to assess cities’ future potential and challenges.

New York’s first-place result reinforces its position as a global economic centre with substantial influence across finance, culture and business. London follows closely in second place, scoring 98.8 overall, while Paris ranks third with 93.4 overall points this year globally.
