Nigerian singer Mr Eazi has claimed that Chelsea once wanted to sign him before the club recruited former Super Eagles midfielder John Obi Mikel. He said he chose music instead of pursuing a football career.
The singer made the claim during an interview with Beat FM. He recalled an alleged opportunity to join the Premier League club around the time Mikel was linked with a move there.
Why Mr Eazi chose music over football
Mr Eazi said he believed he had a better chance of succeeding in music than Mikel. He joked that his decision allowed the former Nigerian international to shine at Chelsea.
“They were gonna sign me. So it was like Mikel Obi and me,” he said.
Explaining his decision, the singer joked that Mikel lacked the musical talent he believed he possessed.
“I just thought that Mikel Obi is not, he doesn’t have talent as a musician. But I can do that. So I let Mikel go to Chelsea,” he added.
Mr Eazi speaks on letting other artistes shine
Mr Eazi also linked the anecdote to his approach to the music industry. He suggested that he was willing to step back and let other artistes enjoy the spotlight after making money from his career.
“So with this, with the music too, I had to, like, step back, go make a couple billion and then let other people shine,” he said.
The singer also mentioned fellow Nigerian artiste Seyi Vibez. He jokingly described him as a great philosopher because of the message, “Let your brother shine.”
Mr Eazi repeated the phrase while discussing his decision to give other artistes room to shine.
Mikel Obi’s career at Chelsea
Mikel joined Chelsea in 2006 and spent 11 years at the club. During his time there, he won two Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2012.
Meanwhile, Mr Eazi has built a career in the Nigerian and international music scenes. His popular songs include Leg Over and Pour Me Water.
