The fight at the box office is already heating up as “Mortal Kombat II” enters the arena with a strong early start, pulling in $5.2 million in Thursday previews.
The Warner Bros. and New Line action movie is shaping up for a competitive weekend, with industry projections placing its debut between $40 million and $45 million. However, Warner Bros. is taking a more cautious stance, estimating an opening closer to $35 million.
Based on the popular, violent video game franchise, the film now heads into a tight showdown with 20th Century Studios’ “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which continues its strong run after a massive $77 million opening last weekend. The sequel is expected to earn between $38 million and $42 million in its second weekend.
The race remains unpredictable, with some projections suggesting both films could land near the $50 million mark, driven by strong word-of-mouth and a boosted Mother’s Day turnout for “The Devil Wears Prada 2.
