Michael Olise’s career-first red card stunned Bayern Munich after two quick yellow cards against Viking in Tuesday’s Champions League match. The French winger received his first booking for a tactical foul before immediately throwing the ball toward Viking captain Zlatko Tripić’s face.
Referee Georgi Kabakov showed Olise another yellow card for the incident, leaving Bayern with ten players during a crucial match. The dismissal came just seconds after his initial booking, turning a routine foul into a costly disciplinary moment for Bayern.
Before Olise’s sending-off, Bayern had recovered from a two-goal deficit to lead 3–2 against Norwegian hosts Viking FK. Harry Kane scored twice, while Luis Díaz added another goal, helping Bayern overturn Viking’s early advantage during the second half.
However, Olise’s red card changed the contest’s momentum, giving Viking renewed hope of salvaging a memorable result against European giants. Viking capitalised late when substitute Herman Haugen scored in the 90th minute, securing a dramatic 3–3 Champions League draw.
Olise’s first career red card marks an unusual moment for the talented winger, who previously avoided dismissal throughout his professional career. Bayern manager Vincent Kompany criticised the incident afterward, describing the decision as unnecessary and acknowledging Olise had let teammates down.
The suspension means Olise will miss Bayern’s upcoming Champions League meeting with Arsenal, dealing the German club a significant attacking setback. Despite the disappointing result, Bayern showed attacking resilience after trailing 2–0, although defensive discipline ultimately proved costly against Viking.
