After sharing a touching video of herself talking candidly about her parenting experience and the pervasive trauma that is typical in African homes, Nigerian actress and director Mercy Aigbe has ignited passionate internet discussions.
In the video, which was taken during a public speaking engagement, Aigbe breaks down in tears while relating a personal tale about her daughter Michelle.
She remembered a time when Michelle brought up a severe discipline episode from years ago.
โAnd I said, Michelle, Iโm so sorry. You might think that the upbringing I gave you was harsh. I was harsh, I canโt lie,โ she admitted in the emotional video.
โA few years ago, I sent my daughter to Canada for school. I was calling her and she didnโt pick. When she finally did, she reminded me, โMommy, remember you hit a bucket on my head one day.โ And that hurt me deeply.โ
Admitting to being a tough parent, she added:
โI was harsh, I canโt lie. And I said, Michelle, Iโm so sorry. You might think the upbringing I gave you was harsh.โ
Aigbe took use of the occasion to draw attention to the ways that unresolved trauma and antiquated parenting techniques are frequently passed down through African families’ generations.
She emphasised the value of introspection, responsibility, and emotional recovery.
โAs African parents, we are too proud. But if I can do it โ if I can apologize and have these conversations โ then others can too.โ
