Matthew Rhys made history at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards after winning two lead acting prizes, while ‘Widow’s Bay’ emerged as the night’s biggest winner with 14 awards.
The Welsh actor won Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in ‘Widow’s Bay’.
He also won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for ‘The Beast In Me’.
The ceremony, hosted by actress Mariska Hargitay, took place on Monday night at the Peacock Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California.
‘Widow’s Bay’ dominates Emmy Awards
‘Widow’s Bay’ was the biggest winner of the night, taking home 14 awards.
The Apple TV comedy won Comedy Series, while Rhys claimed the Lead Actor prize.
Stephen Root won Supporting Actor for the series. Kate O’Flynn also took home Supporting Actress.
Hiro Murai won Directing for a Comedy Series for ‘Widow’s Bay’.
Katie Dippold also won Writing for a Comedy Series for the show.
Betty Gilpin added another award for the series after winning Guest Actress in a Comedy Series.
‘DTF St Louis’ takes seven awards
‘DTF St Louis’ followed ‘Widow’s Bay’ with seven awards.
The HBO Max series won Limited or Anthology Series.
David Harbour won Supporting Actor for his role in the series. Linda Cardellini won Supporting Actress.
The series also won Directing and Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
Rhys makes Emmy history
Rhys’ double victory made him one of the major talking points of the ceremony.
He won the comedy acting prize for ‘Widow’s Bay’ before taking the lead acting award for ‘The Beast In Me’.
For ‘The Beast In Me’, Rhys beat Riz Ahmed for ‘Bait’, Jason Bateman for ‘Black Rabbit’, Charlie Hunnam for ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’ and Oscar Isaac for ‘Beef’.
In the comedy category, he defeated Yahya Abdul-Mateen II for ‘Wonder Man’, Steve Carell for ‘Rooster’, Jason Segel for ‘Shrinking’ and Martin Short for ‘Only Murders In The Building’.
Jean Smart extends Emmy record
Jean Smart also made history with her victory for ‘Hacks’.
The actress won her eighth Emmy and fifth consecutive acting award for the comedy series.
Smart beat Nigerian-American actress Ayo Edebiri, who was nominated for her role in ‘The Bear’.
The category also featured Quinta Brunson for ‘Abbott Elementary’, Elle Fanning for ‘Margo’s Got Money Troubles’ and Lisa Kudrow for ‘The Comeback’.
Joy Sunday misses out
Nigerian-American actress Joy Sunday was also among the nominees at the ceremony.
Sunday was nominated for Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in ‘DTF St Louis’.
However, she lost the award to her co-star Linda Cardellini.
Other major winners
‘The Pitt’ won Drama Series, while Noah Wyle took home Lead Actor in a Drama Series for the show.
Rhea Seehorn won Lead Actress in a Drama Series for ‘Pluribus’.
Tom Pelphrey won Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for ‘Task’, while Allison Janney won Supporting Actress for ‘The Diplomat’.
Elsewhere, ‘The Traitors’ won Reality Competition Programme.
‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ won Variety Series.
The Apple Music Super Bowl LX Halftime Show Starring Bad Bunny won Variety Special (Live).
‘The Muppet Show’ won Variety Special (Pre-recorded).
‘South Park’ also won Outstanding Animated Program.
