Mason Thames will officially voice Dick Grayson in DC Studios’ upcoming animated film Dynamic Duo, marking another exciting casting announcement. The young actor joins the project as the iconic character, widely recognised by comic book fans as Batman’s original Robin.
Director Arthur Mintz praised Thames’ performance during auditions, revealing the actor had always wanted to portray Dick Grayson onscreen. “Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. And he came in, and auditioned the sh!t out of it, and was awesome,” Mintz said.
Dynamic Duo will explore the lives of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, two characters who share Batman’s Robin legacy. The confirmation came from DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran, who explained why Thames stood out among candidates during auditions.
Safran described Thames as deeply passionate about Dick Grayson, noting that the actor eagerly embraced the opportunity to portray him. During his visit to DC Studios, Thames arrived with his father and enthusiastically explored the studio’s extensive collection of comic book archives.
The upcoming production will bring together two famous characters who served as Batman’s sidekicks before pursuing different paths. Logan Kim will voice Jason Todd, the second Robin, whose complicated journey eventually transforms him into the vigilante known as Red Hood.
Unlike traditional superhero adaptations, Dynamic Duo will explore the childhood friendship between Grayson and Todd before their destinies eventually separate. The storyline follows the pair as orphaned street children, with their contrasting ambitions shaping the direction of their relationship.
Arthur Mintz will direct the project, while James Gunn, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves join the production team. Rather than relying on conventional animation, Swaybox Studios will combine puppetry, stop-motion techniques, CGI, and live-action performance.
This distinctive approach promises a visually different experience, with Safran comparing the studio’s innovation to Pixar’s groundbreaking Toy Story. Meanwhile, Thames has previously appeared in The Black Phone and its sequel, alongside the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon.
His growing film career makes the Robin role another significant opportunity to reach audiences through a major franchise. Dynamic Duo will arrive in cinemas on September 22, 2028, giving DC fans another animated adventure to anticipate.
Although the film focuses on Batman’s former sidekicks, DC Studios has not confirmed whether it connects directly with the main DC Universe.
