Keji Hamilton Opens Up on Past Drug Addiction Journey

Keji Hamilton, a former member of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s band, has shared more details about his past struggle with drug addiction. He spoke about it during a recent appearance on The Honest Bunch Podcast.

How It All Started

Hamilton explained that his drug use began with marijuana. Over time, it escalated into stronger substances like crack cocaine and heroin. He said touring with the band exposed him to different environments where drug use was common.

He added that the constant movement and pressure of life on the road made it easier for the habit to grow.

Life on Tour and Exposure to Hard Drugs

While touring internationally, Hamilton said he encountered several substances, including PCP, Angel Dust, and various pills. According to him, drug use was not hidden in many of the spaces he found himself in.

He noted that what started as experimentation slowly became dependence. In those circles, he said it was easy for casual use to turn into a routine.

Addiction to Pentazocine

Hamilton revealed that he became addicted to pentazocine, a strong painkiller. He said he frequently injected the drug during the height of his addiction.

He explained that pentazocine is normally used for medical conditions like surgery recovery, ulcers, and sickle cell pain. However, he said it is often abused in non-medical settings.

Introduction to Cocaine and Crack

He also recounted how he was introduced to cocaine during his time on tour. He said someone offered it to him in a hotel after a performance.

According to him, cocaine is in powder form, while crack is produced after a chemical process. He described how users sometimes convert it using baking soda before smoking it.

Four Years Clean

Hamilton revealed that he has now been clean for four years. He said he spent about eight years battling an addiction that nearly destroyed his life.

He reflected on how close he came to losing everything, but said he is grateful to still be alive and recovering.

Reflection

Hamilton’s story highlights the dangers of drug abuse in the entertainment world. He said his experience serves as a warning to young people about how quickly experimentation can turn into addiction.
