John Frieda, the British celebrity hairstylist who worked with Princess Diana, Madonna and other global stars, has died at the age of 75.
His salon announced his death in an Instagram post on Wednesday. It said he died peacefully, surrounded by his family.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that our dear John passed away peacefully… surrounded by his family,” the salon said.
“John was more than a mentor to us; he was a true icon of the hair industry. He was the person who taught us everything, believed in us, and made us better.”
Frieda’s rise to fame
Born Alan Howard Frieda on July 9, 1951, he came from a family of hairdressers. He trained at the House of Leonard salon in London.
Frieda rose to fame in the 1970s as a hairstylist to celebrities and high-fashion magazines. He later opened his own salons, which grew into an international haircare business.
Over the years, he worked with several famous personalities. They included former US first lady Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Twiggy, Mick Jagger, Nicole Kidman, Madonna and Scarlett Johansson.
He became known for creating natural-looking hairstyles that helped his clients feel confident and look their best.
His haircare business
Beyond hairstyling, Frieda built a successful haircare brand under his name.
His John Frieda Professional Hair Care range became popular for its Frizz-Ease products. The line gained a strong following among people looking for ways to manage frizzy hair.
Japanese cosmetics company Kao bought the brand in 2002.
Marriage and family
Frieda was married twice. His first marriage was to pop singer Lulu, with whom he had one child. They separated in 1991.
He later married Frances Avery Agnelli in 2019. The pair had first met in 2002.
Cetera Lamb, the creative director at his salon, paid tribute to the late hairstylist, describing him as “a true legend, a real maverick in hairdressing”.
Frieda is survived by his wife, four children and two grandchildren.
