‘It doesn’t make sense’: Majid Michel faults comparisons between Ghana’s film industry and Nollywood

Majid Michel, the Ghanaian actor, says it is unfair to compare Ghana’s film industry with Nollywood because Nigeria’s larger population gives it a greater pool of filmmakers.

In an interview on Y1079 FM in Accra, Michel called the comparison “stupid and unfair”. He argued that population differences matter when assessing the size and output of both industries.

“The comparison between us and Nigeria is such a stupid comparison to me. If you have 50 children and I have five children, the possibility that you will have more criminals, doctors, good children, and filmmakers than me is very high,” he said.

Majid Michel cites population difference

The actor noted that Ghana has fewer than 40 million people, while Nigeria has more than 200 million. He said the difference makes comparisons between their film industries unfair.

“We are less than 40 million in Ghana. Nigeria has over 200 million, almost 300 million. So how on earth would you compare? It doesn’t make any sense. Statistically, you should know why

“So if Nigeria has more filmmakers than us, it only makes sense because they are way more than us. It is also unfair for us to compare ourselves with any other established nation in the world.”

Michel’s remarks come amid discussions about Ghana’s film industry and its standing against Nollywood, one of Africa’s prominent film industries.

Actor dismisses claims Ghana’s film industry is declining

Michel also rejected claims that Ghana’s film industry is declining. He maintained that filmmakers continue to work on productions despite concerns about their earnings.

“People are saying the film industry in Ghana is going down. No, it’s not. Productions are going on every day, and filmmakers are producing for Africa Magic. They are busy, and people are constantly on set, but maybe the pay isn’t too good,” he added
