Boxing legend Ismael Laguna dies at 83, leaving behind a legacy that shaped Panamanian boxing and inspired generations. Ismael Laguna, known as the “Tiger of Colón,” died on September 8 at age 83 after spending days in hospital. The cause of death remains undisclosed.
Laguna became Panama’s first WBC world champion when he defeated Carlos Ortiz in April 1965. The victory came during a historic 15-round battle in Panama City. Five years later, Laguna reclaimed the lightweight championship after stopping Mando Ramos in Los Angeles. His victory confirmed his place among boxing’s elite.
Throughout his career, Laguna displayed exceptional technique, speed, movement, and defensive ability inside the ring. He faced celebrated fighters including Nicolino Locche, Flash Elorde, Ken Buchanan, and Carlos Ortiz. His professional career produced 65 victories, nine defeats, and one draw across 75 contests.
Laguna also recorded 37 knockout wins and never suffered a knockout defeat. Beyond championship achievements, Laguna became an important figure in Panama’s history.
His success inspired future champions, including legendary boxer Roberto Durán. Durán described Laguna as an idol and inspiration who showed Panamanians they could reach boxing’s highest level. His influence extended beyond championship victories.
Boxing authorities and sporting figures have paid tribute to the former champion following news of his death. The World Boxing Council also mourned his passing.
Laguna received another major honour in 2001 when the International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted him. That recognition cemented his place among boxing’s greats.
