“Is The Show Of Force Not Too Aggressive?” – Lolo Reacts to Abuja Protest Crackdown

Nigerian actress and media personality Lolo has commented on the use of tear gas cannisters to scatter demonstrators during the Take-It-Back Movement and other civil society organisations’ demonstration in Abuja.

In response to reports that the protest had been disrupted, Lolo questioned the security forces’ justification for using tear gas on the allegedly unarmed and peaceful protesters.

“Citizens have a right to peacefully gather, it’s their right in the constitution. But when they now gather and there is no form of violence, it’s not like they’re carrying guns or anything, no form of violence or agitation.”

Lolo questioned whether the use of force in this instance was justified and highlighted that nonviolent protests are an essential component of any functioning democracy.

Her remarks follow allegations and widely shared videos of security forces using tear gas and heavily deploying armed officers to disperse protesters during a demonstration in the nation’s capital to address concerns of governance and economic hardship.

Lolo’s response reflects the public’s growing dissatisfaction with the way the government manages peaceful protests.

The perceived militarisation of nonviolent protests has drawn criticism from many residents, who contend that such tactics only serve to increase tension and threaten democratic rights.

Netizens responded to her message in droves, echoing her emotions and expressing dismay at the degree of aggression expressed.

Given that the protest was mainly peaceful before it was violently dispersed, some social media users felt that the excessive use of force was inappropriate.

Lolo is one of several prominent Nigerians who are speaking out against the oppressive responses to civic engagement.

Influencers, artists, and activists have all used their platforms to advocate for increased observance of human rights, particularly the right to peaceful assembly.

A Call for Dialogue and Reform

Many people think that instead of using intimidation, the government should start interacting with the public through discussion.

Frustrations are growing and nonviolent protests are growing more common as a result of the nation’s current economic difficulties.

Lolo has contributed her voice to an important discussion concerning democracy, accountability, and the role of security personnel in upholding order without violating citizens’ rights by challenging the response to the Abuja demonstration.

One thing is certain as Nigerians keep demanding change: the clamour for openness, equitable government, and adherence to fundamental liberties is only becoming louder.
