Spider-Man: Brand New Day Scores Historic $927 Million Opening Weekend

Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has shattered expectations with a massive $927 million global opening weekend. The film recorded the second-biggest worldwide debut in box office history.

The latest Spider-Man adventure earned $355 million in North America. It also pulled in $572 million from 66 international markets. Only Avengers: Endgame opened higher, with $1.2 billion worldwide in 2019.

Strong International Performance

China delivered the biggest overseas opening with $121 million. The United Kingdom followed with $49 million. Mexico generated $38.3 million, while South Korea added $25 million.

The film also set opening-weekend records in several countries. France contributed $26.6 million. India brought in $31.8 million. Brazil added $23.8 million, while Spain generated $15.6 million.

Industry analysts believe the strong start in China could help the movie cross the $2 billion mark globally. Only seven films have achieved that feat.

Premium Screens Boost Earnings

Moviegoers also turned out in large numbers for premium-format screenings.

Although Spider-Man: Brand New Day was not shown on IMAX screens, it still broke records on other formats. The film earned $10 million from Dolby screenings in North America. It also generated $17 million globally from 4DX and $14.4 million from ScreenX.

Story Continues After ‘No Way Home’

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Peter Parker continues life after erasing himself from everyone’s memory.

The story follows Spider-Man as he faces a mysterious threat in New York City. At the same time, he struggles with his changing powers. He also deals with the fact that MJ and Ned no longer remember him.

The film has received strong reviews. It holds a 90 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore rating from audiences.

Amy Pascal Reacts

“We’re incredibly grateful to audiences for embracing the bold, creative and deeply emotional vision Destin took with this film,” said producer Amy Pascal.
