Inter Miami have announced the arrival of Argentine coach Cristian “Kily” Gonzalez as their new manager, with the 52-year-old set to lead the Major League Soccer club until June 2028.
The club confirmed Gonzalez’s arrival on Tuesday after he secured the necessary U.S. work permits, clearing the final hurdle for him to take charge of the team.
Inter Miami had announced last month that Gonzalez would become manager once his work permit was approved. Guillermo Hoyos, who previously oversaw Miami’s professional development structure, had been serving as interim boss following Javier Mascherano’s departure in April.
Gonzalez takes over a Miami side that has endured a difficult run of form despite having Lionel Messi and several established players in its squad.
The reigning MLS Cup champions have recorded just one win in their last five regular-season matches. They currently sit second in the Eastern Conference, nine points behind leaders Nashville.
The Argentine brings extensive experience from both his playing and coaching careers. He earned 56 caps for Argentina between 1995 and 2005 and played for clubs including Inter Milan, Valencia and Rosario Central.
Gonzalez moved into management in 2020 and has since coached several clubs in Argentina.
His appointment comes at a crucial stage of Miami’s campaign, with the new manager scheduled to lead his first training session on Tuesday morning.
Gonzalez will then prepare the team for their Campeones Cup clash against Mexican side CD Cruz Azul on Wednesday.
