“I Shamelessly Begged Don Jazzy to Sign Me” — Tiwa Savage Reflects on Joining Mavin Records

Tiwa Savage has revealed that despite being close to the Mo’ Hits crew back in the day, she was never officially signed to the label.

Speaking during an interview with Afrobeats Intelligence, the singer explained that many people assumed she was part of Mo’ Hits because she worked with Don Jazzy and even recorded dance songs with him. However, she said she was really just “a friend of the family” and not an official artist under the label.

According to Tiwa, things changed after the Mo’ Hits era ended and Don Jazzy started Mavin Records. She recalled going to Don Jazzy and saying, “You didn’t sign me during Mo’ Hits, now you’ve started Mavin, can you sign me now?”

Tiwa said Don Jazzy responded by telling her he didn’t yet have a “first lady” for the label. The award-winning singer also admitted she had no shame in asking for the opportunity, revealing that she went back to Don Jazzy again to personally ask him to sign her, and he simply said yes.
