How Lady Doja Allen Is Building Nigeria’s First Female-Led Radio Group

The ever-competitive radio landscape in Nigeria is witnessing the emergence of a new media powerhouse, with Lady Doja Allen expanding her broadcasting footprint. Beyond City 105.1 FM, she has launched 93.5 Area FM, a new station built around Lagos’s energy, language, lifestyle, and experiences.

The new station, rooted in the language, lifestyle, and experiences of Lagos, marks another significant step in Allen’s broadcasting journey. Her latest move follows years of transforming a struggling radio station into a recognised Lagos media and broader broadcasting group.

Lady Doja Allen serves as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Cardinal Broadcasting Limited, operators of City 105.1 FM. She took over City FM during a difficult period and subsequently led major restructuring efforts across the station’s operations. Those changes included a rebranding and relaunch in 2012, helping transform City FM from insolvency toward profitability and stronger market positioning.

Today, City FM operates within the top tier of Lagos’s urban radio market, reflecting the impact of Allen’s leadership. Her story remains notable because she occupies one of Nigeria’s most influential leadership positions within commercial radio as a woman.

Leading Ladies Africa described Allen as Nigeria’s first female CEO of a radio station, highlighting her role transforming City FM. The recognition also highlighted her contribution toward creating opportunities for women and young professionals across Nigeria’s evolving media industry.

Since taking charge of City FM, Allen has demonstrated ambitions extending beyond simply operating a successful radio station within Lagos. Under her leadership, City FM developed a strong urban lifestyle identity that attracts audiences across different demographics throughout the metropolis.

Initiatives such as the City Media Academy have also focused on developing Nigeria’s next generation of broadcasting professionals. The academy supports aspiring broadcasters, presenters, producers, and media professionals seeking opportunities within Nigeria’s competitive and rapidly changing industry.

The launch of 93.5 Area FM represents a potentially important evolution of Allen’s broader broadcasting strategy within Lagos and Nigeria. Rather than creating another general-interest station, Area FM is developing an identity around Lagos’s language, lifestyle, and everyday experiences.

The station cuts across ethnic, social, and economic boundaries while remaining deeply embedded within everyday communication across Lagos and Nigeria. That positioning gives Area FM a distinctly grassroots character capable of connecting naturally with diverse listeners throughout the city’s communities. The station can speak to audiences using language that naturally captures humour, culture, street experiences, entertainment, and social commentary.

For Lady Doja Allen, the expansion represents more than simply adding another frequency to Lagos’s increasingly crowded radio landscape. The development points toward a female-led broadcasting enterprise with potential to operate across multiple formats and audiences within Nigeria.

Allen has also entered an exclusive tier of Nigerian radio entrepreneurs who own or operate more than one radio station. She now joins established industry figures such as Ameen Mousalli, Chris Ubosi, and Tajudeen Adepetu within Nigeria’s broadcasting ownership landscape. Those entrepreneurs have built significant broadcasting portfolios across Nigeria, demonstrating the growing scale of the country’s commercial radio industry.

City FM itself has become a case study in media turnaround following its launch in Lagos during 2010 and subsequent challenges. After Allen assumed leadership, the station underwent significant restructuring designed to strengthen revenue, brand identity, operations, and staff retention.

Her leadership philosophy has increasingly incorporated corporate structure and governance as important elements of the organisation’s continuing development. In a recent discussion about City FM’s evolution, Allen described its journey through revenue difficulties, brand challenges, and staff retention concerns.

She also highlighted stronger corporate governance systems introduced during the station’s transformation into a more structured media organisation. The Lagos radio market remains highly competitive, with stations targeting audiences through language, music preferences, age groups, lifestyles, and geography.

Area FM’s strategic positioning provides another proposition designed to communicate across social and ethnic boundaries within Lagos’s diverse population. Such positioning could prove particularly suitable for a city where different communities constantly interact through entertainment, culture, business, and everyday communication.

As the new station establishes itself, its ability to connect with listeners will determine how strongly Area FM competes. For Lady Doja Allen, the latest launch signals an ambitious new chapter in her continuing Nigerian broadcasting journey.

It also demonstrates her intention to build beyond one successful station while creating platforms capable of reaching different audiences. The emergence of 93.5 Area FM therefore adds another significant development to Lagos’s competitive radio landscape and Nigeria’s broader media industry.
