Former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo has made his choice for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd.).
It doesn’t come as a shock to many observers especially because the former president has been very critical of the incumbent president Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
Although the former president and the incumbent belong to the Peoples Democratic Party, the former has not hidden his disdain for the incumbent especially in his now famous letter to Goodluck Jonathan which sparked an equally outraged reply from Goodluck Jonathan.
If there’s anything Olusegun Obasanjo is known for, it’s his flair for the dramatic and even in picking sides, he had to pick the most dramatic moment.
In an interview with the Financial Times on the occasion of the launch of his controversial autobiography in Nairobi titled “The watch”, the former president dropped his bombshell. In his own words; “The circumstances he (Buhari) will be working under if he wins the elections are different from the one he worked under before, where he was both the executive and the legislature – he knows that. He is smart enough. He is educated enough. He’s experienced enough. Why shouldn’t I support him?”
He called Jonathan’s leadership into question especially regarding corruption and the insecurity in the North; “It is a question of leadership – political and military. I think you need to ask Jonathan how he let the army go to this extent.?Many things went wrong: recruitment went wrong; training went wrong; morale went down; motivation was not there; corruption was deeply ingrained; and welfare was bad.”
It is the latest in a series of endorsements which mean that the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan is facing his sternest political test of all time.
