Foden says recent performances are boosting confidence after a difficult spell

Phil Foden says he is beginning to rediscover his best form after a difficult spell that cost him a place in England‘s 2026 World Cup squad.

The Manchester City midfielder believes his recent performances have boosted his confidence. He is hoping to maintain that form ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against RB Leipzig.

Foden enjoyed an outstanding 2023-24 season. He scored a career-best 27 goals in all competitions. His performances also earned him the Premier League Player of the Season and PFA Player of the Year awards.

However, the 26-year-old struggled to maintain that form. His dip in performance eventually saw him miss England’s 2026 World Cup squad.

“Hopefully I can get back to that level,” Foden told reporters on Tuesday.

“I think I’m slightly starting to get back there now with my recent performances.”

Foden regains confidence with goals

The England international scored his first Premier League goal of the season against Ipswich Town last month.

That came after he served a suspension for his red card in City’s Manchester derby victory over Manchester United.

He followed up with an impressive display in City’s 5-1 Champions League win over AEK Athens. Foden scored a hat-trick and provided an assist in the encounter.

The midfielder believes his break after the suspension helped him return with a fresh mindset.

“I had the unfortunate red card against United. But the break did me good. I think I came back really fresh-minded and sharp,” he said.

Foden also said regular playing time and goal contributions had helped him regain confidence.

“Being involved in goals gives you a lot of confidence, and when you’re playing regularly as well, you kind of just get into a rhythm and a groove.”

Foden focused on Manchester City

Meanwhile, Foden said he had not spoken to England manager Thomas Tuchel since missing out on the World Cup squad.

He remains hopeful of earning another international call-up. However, he insists his immediate priority is performing for City.

“All I try and do really is focus on my own game, and hopefully one day the call-up might come back,” he said.
