Derek Hanekom, veteran ANC MP has resigned from his seat in the parliament. His resignation is borne out of the motive to take up a position in the Presidency. The former minister of tourism has served as minister of land reform, science and technology and tourism in the governments of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki, Jacob Zuma and Cyril Ramaphosa. However, recently, he was left out of Ramaphosa’s newly-elected Cabinet two weeks ago.
His resignation is following identical moves made by other MP in the light of the exclusion from the new Cabinet, and non-promotion to higher offices. Other who have taken like steps include; Bathabile Dlamini, Jeff Radebe, Siyabonga Cwele, Susan Shabangu, Nomaindia Mfeketo, Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba and Tokozile Xasa.
