DEALING WITH STRESS AT WORK

So we talked about how to avoid stress last week. Now we shall talk about how to deal with actual stress. We established that stress is becoming a part of everyday life for more and more people home and abroad be it at work or at the home front. While stress is not always bad, for example, it keeps us on our toes during an important presentation, stops us from making certain costly mistakes at work, and help keep us focused on some important tasks, we still need to deal with it before it crosses the thin line between good and bad. Thus the issue now would be how to deal with it whenever it comes upon us.

How exactly can stress be dealt with?

  1. Initiate positive relationships

Take breaks in between work, engage your colleagues in intelligent conversations. Simply sharing your thoughts and feelings with another person can help reduce stress. Talking over a problem with someone who is both supportive and empathetic can be a great way to let off steam and help you become calm and focused. If there is no one to talk to, you can always build new friendships, and derive pleasure in having people to talk to around you.

  1. Exercise regularly

This cannot be overemphasized. Exercise increases your heart rate and makes you sweat. This helps lift your mood and release the stressed nodes in your body. When stress is mounting at work, try to take a quick break and move away from the stressful situation. Take a stroll outside the workplace if possible. Physical movement can help you regain your balance.

  1. Eat well

Seems like a normal thing to say, but then yes, to reduce stress you need to eat well. Have you noticed that when you are worried/stressed you tend to eat more, mostly junks with lots of sugar which is not good for you and your health. Eat well- the right combination of the classes of food.

  1. Sleep well

Yes, it is difficult to get at least 8 hours sleep because of the many things on your mind and all/ a good sleep will do you a lot of good and relieve you of a lot of stress.

  1. Manage your time well

Managing your time well helps in avoiding as well as dealing with stress. Balance your daily schedules. Make sure there is a bit of a balance between work and family life. Have a life apart from work. Leave the house earlier than you used to if it would prevent you from having to rush for bus or getting stuck in traffic and then disturb your head about what time you would get to work. Also prioritize and break your tasks into little bits. All these help manage your time, thus reducing your stress.
