President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the commitment of the Federal Government to the provision of strong oversight function and funding for polio programmes in Nigeria.
To achieve this, the President is reconstituting an expanded presidential task force on polio which would include the 36 statesโ governors to sustain the success currently recorded.
President Buhari spoke at the signing of the updated Abuja commitment on polio eradication in the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Wednesday.
The event attracted the Chairmen of the Bill andย Melindaย Gates Foundation – Bill Gatesย as well as the Chairman of Dangote Group- Aliko Dangote, who are all partners with the Federal Government in the effort to eradicate polio in the country.
States like Kano, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto and Yobeย had earlier signed a Memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bill Gates and Dangote Foundations, to strengthen routine immunisation in the Northern region.
The partnership is aimed at eradicating polio cases and other child killer diseases in Northern Nigeria and other States.
The World Health Organization in September 2015, removed Nigeria from the list of polio endemic nations in the world. It ,markedย the first time that Nigeria has interrupted transmission of wild poliovirus, bringing the country and the African region closer than ever to being certified polio-free.
