British singer Jorja Smith has revealed that her collaboration with Wizkid, ‘Alive’, started as a Wizkid record before she heard it and added her own contribution.
Smith disclosed during an interview with JAM FM Berlin. She discussed her new album, AI in music and the story behind ‘Alive’.
How ‘Alive’ came together
Smith said ‘Alive’ is the oldest song on the project. She explained that Nigerian-British producer P2J had already made the record with Wizkid before she heard it.
“P2J had that song with Wiz already, and then I heard it,” she said.
Smith added that Wizkid’s existing verse helped shape her contribution to the song.
The singer said ‘Alive’ captures the feeling of driving towards someone at the start of a new relationship.
“It was just reminding me of driving down to meet someone. There’s like a driving force in the song, a pull,” she said.
Smith said the song is about finding fresh love. The music video was also filmed in Paris to match the track’s mood.
P2J’s link with Wizkid
P2J, whose real name is Richard Isong, has a long-running creative relationship with Wizkid.
He produced most of Wizkid’s Made in Lagos album. The project includes the global hit ‘Essence’ featuring Tems.
P2J also produced key tracks on More Love, Less Ego and Morayo.
His long-running work with Wizkid explains that the producer already had a Wizkid record in place before Smith joined the song.
Smith on AI-generated music
Elsewhere in the interview, Smith discussed the growing use of AI-generated music.
She said fake music and content had become difficult to distinguish from authentic material. Even members of her family had been fooled.
“AI is kind of a scary grey area. Where is this going?” she said.
Smith said she has been working with her team to monitor and respond to fake content as it appears.
