BTS made a triumphant return to the spotlight at the 2026 American Music Awards, winning Artist of the Year despite the group’s hiatus for military service. The fan-voted victory marked the global K-pop sensation’s second time claiming the prestigious honour after first winning it in 2021.
The night also belonged to rising girl group Katseye, whose rapidly growing fan base helped secure the New Artist of the Year award in one of the ceremony’s most competitive categories. Fellow nominees included Sombr, Olivia Dean, Ella Langley, Leon Thomas and Alex Warren.
Although Sombr missed out on the new artist prize, the singer-songwriter still emerged as one of the evening’s biggest winners. Following his live performance, he collected Best Rock/Alternative Song for “Back to Friends” and Best Rock/Alternative Album for “I Barely Know Her.” He also earned Breakthrough Rock/Alternative Artist in an off-air presentation.
The animated music phenomenon “KPop Demon Hunters” continued its awards-season momentum as “Golden,” performed by EJAE, Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, won Song of the Year. The soundtrack ultimately contributed to four AMA victories, making it one of the ceremony’s standout successes.
Several acts ended the night tied with three wins each, including BTS, Katseye, Sombr, Sabrina Carpenter, Cardi B, Bruno Mars and the singing voices of Huntr/X. Bad Bunny, Ella Langley, Shakira and Tyla each scored two wins.

Taylor Swift entered the ceremony as the most nominated artist with eight nods but went home empty-handed. Olivia Dean, Lady Gaga and Alex Warren were also shut out despite multiple nominations.
