In 2010, one of the biggest oil spills ever occurred after an explosion at a rig operated by BP led to the death of 11 people and also led to the spillage of 134 million gallons of oil into the gulf of Mexico.
Six years after the incident, a US federal judge has approved the final settlement of $2obn which will be paid over 16 years by BP. The federal judge found BP workers ‘grossly negligent’ in the oil spill and has awarded what is likely to be the biggest ever settlement in an oil spill case.
US Attorney General Loretta Lynch applauded the judgment and said,ย “Today’s action holds BP accountable with the largest environmental penalty of all time while launching one of the most extensive environmental restoration efforts ever undertaken,”
