Trump Claims Republicans Lost Midterm Elections Because He Wasn’t on the Ballot

President Donald Trump says Republicans lost the 2026 midterm elections because he wasn’t personally on the ballot, despite campaigning extensively nationwide. Following Democratic victories across several states, Trump argued that Republican candidates would have performed better if voters had directly elected him.

“I wasn’t on the Ballot and if I was, we would have won IN A LANDSLIDE!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. The president made the remark Tuesday evening as election results showed Democrats gaining significant ground across traditionally Republican strongholds.

Trump’s statement came after Democrats secured control of the Senate, flipping several Republican-held seats through victories across multiple states. Meanwhile, Democrats also moved closer to winning the House of Representatives, threatening Republican control of both congressional chambers.

During a telephone interview with CBS News, Trump again insisted that his absence from the ballot contributed significantly to Republican losses. He argued that his supporters would have turned out in greater numbers if his name had appeared alongside Republican candidates.

Trump also congratulated Democrats on their victories, saying he looked forward to working with them for the country’s benefit. The president maintained that he had worked hard to support Republican candidates throughout the election campaign.

However, several Republican defeats have intensified discussions about the party’s campaign strategy and Trump’s influence on competitive races. Before Election Day, Trump repeatedly urged supporters to pretend his name appeared on the ballot during the midterm elections.

His comments reflected concerns about Republican voter turnout and the party’s ability to maintain its congressional majorities. The election results now place Democrats in a stronger position to challenge Trump’s legislative agenda during his remaining presidential term.

Trump’s explanation has consequently drawn attention as political observers examine the factors behind the Republican Party’s disappointing election performance.
