Democrats Win Control of US Senate as House Election Results Remain Undecided

Democrats have won control of the United States Senate following major victories in the 2026 midterm elections, reshaping the balance of power in Washington. The party secured several important Senate victories, including races in Texas, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Ohio.

Former Texas state representative James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton, giving Democrats a historic Senate victory in the traditionally Republican state. In North Carolina, former Governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican Michael Whatley, securing another significant victory for the Democratic Party.

Democrats also celebrated Annie Andrews’ victory in South Carolina and Sherrod Brown’s return to the Senate after defeating Republican Jon Husted in Ohio. These results helped Democrats overcome the Republican majority and reclaim control of the upper chamber of Congress.

However, the battle for the House of Representatives remains unresolved as election officials continue counting votes across several competitive districts. Democrats have flipped multiple Republican-held seats, strengthening their position as they pursue control of the lower chamber.

The final House outcome will determine whether Democrats secure unified congressional control or share legislative power with Republicans. A Democratic majority in both chambers would significantly change the political landscape during President Donald Trump’s remaining two years in office.

Party leaders could gain greater influence over legislation, congressional investigations, government spending, and oversight of the administration. Meanwhile, Republicans face the prospect of losing their congressional advantage following the latest election results.

The 2026 midterms have therefore become an important turning point in determining Washington’s political direction.
