Trump Moon Claim: Donald Trump Says “The Moon Is Ours”

President Donald Trump has sparked global attention with his Trump Moon claim, declaring, “The Moon is ours,” on Truth Social. Trump shared an image showing the lunar surface beside an American flag.

The post quickly triggered debate about whether the United States could legally claim the Moon. However, Trump did not announce a formal policy establishing American ownership.

International space law challenges national ownership claims over celestial bodies. The 1967 Outer Space Treaty bars countries from claiming sovereignty over the Moon. The United States remains a party to that treaty. Therefore, the Trump Moon claim does not create American territorial rights over lunar territory.

Trump also promoted an idea to rename New Mexico as “New America.” His activity has attracted widespread international attention. The Moon post featured bold lettering declaring American ownership beside the United States flag.

Still, the statement has no immediate legal effect under international space law. The Outer Space Treaty prevents nations from appropriating celestial bodies through sovereignty claims. That principle has shaped international space cooperation since the modern space era began.

Meanwhile, the United States remains a major power in lunar exploration and technology. NASA continues developing plans for future human missions to the Moon. Those missions do not grant the United States ownership of lunar territory.

The Trump Moon claim therefore remains a political statement rather than a recognized territorial declaration. International observers will likely debate the significance behind Trump’s latest post. For now, the Moon remains outside national territorial ownership under established international law.
