Google Maps Lake America update has officially begun, changing Lake Ontario’s displayed name to “Lake America” for users located within America. The change follows President Donald Trump’s executive order signed August 27, directing the United States to rename Lake Ontario “Lake America.”
Google explained that its Maps platform follows official geographic naming information from government sources, including the United States Geographic Names Information System. Consequently, American users will now see “Lake America” when viewing the Great Lake through Google Maps across supported devices.
Meanwhile, Canadian users will continue seeing “Lake Ontario,” reflecting Canada’s continued recognition of the lake’s traditional name. People outside America and Canada will see both names displayed, showing Google’s approach to geographic names varying between countries.
The renaming has intensified tensions between Washington and Ottawa following disagreements over trade, tariffs, and broader diplomatic relations. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney rejected the change, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford publicly defended Lake Ontario’s traditional name.
Ford even unveiled a massive sign declaring “Lake Ontario. Now and Always,” emphasizing Canada’s continued attachment to the original name. The Google Maps Lake America update also follows Trump’s earlier push to rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America.”
Unlike Google Maps, other mapping platforms have not universally adopted the new designation, creating different labels across digital navigation services. For now, the Google Maps Lake America update represents a significant digital reflection of America’s newly adopted federal geographic naming.
