NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resignation has shaken Nigerian football after Gusau and Executive Committee members stepped down amid mounting leadership pressure. Gusau announced his resignation Thursday during a press conference at the NFF headquarters in Abuja, confirming weeks of growing speculation.
The NFF president said consultations with family, friends, stakeholders, and football officials influenced his decision to leave office. He explained that his resignation could create room for comprehensive reforms addressing institutional, governance, and developmental challenges confronting Nigerian football. General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi also resigned, while every member of the NFF Executive Committee reportedly followed the leadership departure.
Pressure intensified after Nigeria suffered major setbacks involving the Super Eagles and Super Falcons across recent international competitions. The Super Eagles missed the 2026 World Cup after losing to Democratic Republic of Congo during a dramatic penalty shootout.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons missed the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time since the tournament began. Their elimination followed a 2-1 playoff defeat against South Africa, creating unprecedented disappointment among Nigerian football supporters nationwide this month.
Earlier, Cameroon eliminated the defending champions during the WAFCON quarterfinals, ending Nigeria’s title defence and automatic qualification pathway. Gusau’s departure comes just weeks before the NFF’s scheduled elective congress on September 27, creating uncertainty around future leadership.
