Algeria secured historic WAFCON bronze after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties following Saturday’s dramatic 1-1 draw. The result delivered Algeria’s best-ever finish at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations since their tournament debut.
Morocco initially took control when Kautar Azraf opened scoring before halftime, giving the hosts an early advantage. However, Algeria responded strongly and eventually forced the decisive penalty shootout after regulation time ended level.
Algeria’s players then converted enough penalties to claim bronze, leaving Morocco disappointed in front of home supporters. The historic WAFCON bronze also completes Algeria’s remarkable tournament campaign, despite their semifinal defeat against Malawi.
Malawi defeated Algeria 3-1 in their semifinal, with Tabitha Chawinga scoring twice alongside sister Temwa Chawinga’s decisive goal. Despite that setback, Algeria secured qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil through semifinal qualification.
This year’s tournament features sixteen teams and doubles as Africa’s qualifying competition for the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Morocco hosted the competition across Rabat, Casablanca and Fez, becoming the first country to host three consecutive editions.
Nigeria entered Morocco 2026 as defending champions after defeating Morocco 3-2 during the 2024 final. Meanwhile, Malawi and Cape Verde made their tournament debuts, with Malawi reaching an historic final against Cameroon.
For Algeria, the WAFCON bronze represents a landmark achievement and signals their growing strength within African women’s football.
