Universal Pictures has set an Aug. 6, 2027, release date for “Snoop,” the upcoming biopic about rap star Snoop Dogg.

The R-rated film will open in theatres alongside Disney’s “The Bluey Movie” and Black Bear’s “Jason Statham Stole My Bike.” Jonathan Daviss, known for “Outer Banks,” will play the lead role.

Universal describes the project as the “definitive biopic of the artist, mogul and icon of gangsta rap.” Craig Brewer, the director of “Hustle & Flow” and “Song Sung Blue,” will direct the film.

The movie will feature songs from Snoop Dogg’s career, including “Drop It Like It’s Hot,” “Gin and Juice,” “What’s My Name,” and “Nuthin’ but a ‘G’ Thang.”

Although Universal has not revealed plot details, the film is expected to explore major moments in Snoop Dogg’s life and career. The rapper rose to fame in 1992 after appearing on Dr Dre’s single “Deep Cover” and later on the album “The Chronic.”

“Snoop” is the first project under Universal’s deal with Death Row Pictures, Snoop Dogg’s content company. Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment will produce the film alongside Snoop Dogg and Death Row Pictures President Sara Ramaker.

When Universal announced the project, Donna Langley praised the rapper’s impact on popular culture.

“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” Langley said.

She added, “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”

Production is expected to begin this summer.
