DJ Cuppy explains why she is moving away from her signature pink image

DJ Cuppy, the Nigerian disc jockey and music producer, has explained why she no longer wants the colour pink to define her public image after 17 years.

Cuppy, whose real name is Florence Otedola, spoke in an interview with GQ Poland for the magazine’s November 2026 edition. A clip from the interview surfaced on X on Friday.

The entertainer became known for her pink hair, outfits and accessories. However, she said she no longer wants people to associate her identity with just one colour.

“I was known for the colour pink, and it was my identity for so many years, and a lot of people are asking what happened to the pink,” she said. “I don’t think I should be boxed into a colour.”

Why DJ Cuppy embraced pink

Cuppy explained that pink meant more to her than fashion. She said the colour represented power, vibrancy, self-expression and confidence.

She traced her attachment to pink to the early years of her career, about 17 years ago. At the time, she wanted to establish herself in a music industry dominated by men.

She said she used the colour to express her femininity and make her presence felt in the industry.

However, years of experience have changed how she views her public image. The DJ said she now feels free to express her femininity through different colours.

“Now that I’ve been through a lot of doors and kicked down some windows, I feel like I can represent my femininity through any colour,” she said.

DJ Cuppy describes her current style

During the interview, Cuppy also discussed her fashion choices and how her career influences her style.

Asked to describe her current look, she called it “vibrant, grounded and ethnic”. She added that she considers her position as a woman in a male-dominated industry when choosing what to wear.

The entertainer did not point to a particular event that prompted the change. She also did not say she had stopped wearing pink altogether.

Rather, she explained that the colour no longer needs to serve as her signature or define her entire identity.

Beyond music, Cuppy is known for her philanthropic activities. She is also the daughter of Nigerian businessman Femi Otedola.
