Elon Musk Boosts Armie Hammer’s Comeback Film ‘Citizen Vigilante’ With X Post

Elon Musk sparked fresh debate after sharing Armie Hammer’s controversial comeback film, Citizen Vigilante, with his 240 million followers on X.

Musk posted the indie action film on Friday. The link stayed live for about 48 hours before it disappeared on Saturday.

German filmmaker Uwe Boll wrote and directed the movie. It follows Hammer as an American in Europe who hunts down criminal migrants. Germany banned the film because of its graphic violence and anti-migrant themes. The movie opened in U.S. theatres on June 19.

The film has received strong criticism from reviewers. In Variety’s review, critic Todd Gilchrist wrote, “Boll, a cinematic embarrassment since the early 2000s, here delivers a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation on the same qualitative level as ‘House of the Dead,’ ‘Alone in the Dark’ and ‘BloodRayne.’ In fact, the film is so astonishingly bad, it almost feels like the writer-director-producer is deliberately sabotaging his star Armie Hammer, whose intended comeback can only be harmed by this project.”

Hammer, known for The Social Network, Call Me By Your Name and Sorry to Bother You, has worked to rebuild his career since sexual assault allegations surfaced in 2021. He denied the allegations. Prosecutors later declined to file charges in 2023.

The attention around the film grew after Boll announced that Citizen Vigilante 2 will arrive in 2027. Musk also replied to a post that showed the film at No. 2 on the Apple TV charts. He wrote, “’ Citizen Vigilante 2’ will be even better.”
