SZA has criticised musicians who support artificial intelligence in music creation. The singer accused AI platforms such as Suno of using the work of Black writers and producers to train their systems.
In a series of Instagram posts, SZA expressed concern about how AI companies use creative content. She suggested that Black artists are especially vulnerable to having their work copied.
“We make up 13% of the American population yet influence the world with our sound and perspective,” she wrote. “I AIN ‘T HEARD A WHITE AI SONG YET…We have no protection in the legislature, medical or creative. The easiest to steal from. DO NOT GIVE AWAY YOUR VIBRANIUM !!! DO NOT TRAIN AI WITH YOUR GENIUS.”
SZA later claimed that a search of her name showed AI models had been trained on 238 of her songs.
“If you’re a musician and you support this degenerate shit? Your [sic] DISGUSTING and there’s NOTHING YOU COULD EVER SAY TO ME TO MAKE THIS OKAY,” she wrote. “I hope u have the life u deserve.”
Her comments add to the growing debate over AI in the music industry. While some artists oppose the technology, others support it.
Producer Diplo recently said, “There’s no fighting AI.” He also stated that “I can get the best voice from AI” for his music.
Suno declined to comment on SZA’s remarks. However, the company pointed to a statement from its chief product officer. He said Suno’s training data does not include artists’ names and cannot reproduce the material used in training.
