Leandro Paredes Receives 10-Match Ban After World Cup Final Brawl

Leandro Paredes World Cup ban now stands at ten matches after FIFA punished him for his post-final confrontation with Spain recently. FIFA announced the suspension Friday after reviewing scenes following Argentina’s 1-0 defeat against Spain in the World Cup final.

Paredes received the heaviest punishment after confronting Spanish players, including Gavi and Eric Garcia, during the heated post-match scuffle. The incident happened on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, shortly after Spain secured their historic World Cup triumph.

Spain won through Ferran Torres, whose extra-time goal ended Argentina’s title defence and sparked heated scenes between both teams afterward. During the confrontation, Paredes pushed Gavi and clashed with Garcia, escalating tensions before officials and players eventually separated everyone involved.

Consequently, FIFA’s disciplinary committee handed Paredes a ten-match international suspension alongside a 90,000-dollar fine for his actions. Meanwhile, Argentina teammate Nahuel Molina received seven matches and a 90,000-dollar fine for his involvement during the confrontation.

Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension, while Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala received three matches for his separate involvement afterward. On Spain’s side, Gavi received a one-match suspension and a 30,000-dollar fine for unsporting behaviour during the post-final incident.

Additionally, FIFA fined the Argentine Football Association 321,000 dollars over several disciplinary issues, including a controversial Falklands Islands banner.
