Lady Gaga has submitted her original song “The Dead Dance” from Wednesday for Emmy consideration in the outstanding music and lyrics category, further strengthening her collaboration with the hit Netflix series.
The upbeat track appears in Season 2, Episode 7 of Wednesday during a dance sequence featuring Enid, played by Emma Myers, and Agnes, played by Evie Templeton, at the Venetian Gala.
The song was written and produced by Gaga alongside longtime collaborators Andrew Watt and Cirkut. Speaking to Tudum, Gaga explained how the project came together. “I got a phone call that the show was looking for music. I immediately had a song in mind called ‘The Dead Dance.’ Once I knew it would be for ‘Wednesday,’ I decided to work on it even more and made it extra special for the show.”
Gaga revealed the song was inspired by heartbreak. “It’s about how we sometimes feel when it’s over, how a relationship ending can kill our ability to feel hopeful about love,” she said. “I’ll keep on dancing till I’m dead,” she added, explaining the line means “I’m taking the power back.”
The singer also described the song as a celebration of resilience and friendship. “Do the Dead Dance, the Dead Dance,” she said, “becomes about having fun with your friends when you’ve been through something tough and amazing.”
