Shakira Draws Record Crowd of 2 Million to Rio’s Copacabana Beach

More than two million fans flooded Copacabana Beach on Saturday night as global superstar Shakira delivered a historic free concert that underscored Rio de Janeiro’s growing reputation for turning music spectacles into economic gold.

The show, part of the city’s Todo Mundo no Rio (“Everyone in Rio”) concert series, is projected to generate about 777 million reais (roughly $155 million), according to city estimates. Framing the strategy ahead of the event, Rio’s mayor, Eduardo Cavaliere, said: “Our investment in this show will give us a financial return 40 times greater.”

Following blockbuster performances by Madonna and Lady Gaga in previous years, the initiative has driven sharp spikes in tourism, positioning these concerts as more than entertainment—they are major economic engines.

Fans travelled from across Brazil and as far as Paris and London, claiming spots on the beach from early morning. The city deployed nearly 8,000 security officers, alongside drones and facial recognition systems, to manage the massive turnout, while vendors transformed the beachfront into a thriving pop-up marketplace.

Shakira, dressed in Brazil’s national colours, took the stage to roaring cheers, joined by Anitta, Caetano Veloso, and Maria Bethânia. Addressing the crowd in Portuguese, she reflected on her early connection to the country, recalling her first visit at 18.
