National Assembly Stops the Planned Increase in Electricity Tariff

The Minister of Power, Sale Mamman had earlier announced the increase in electricity tariff from July 1, which has caused a lot of controversy as it can be gathered from public opinion that Nigerians are not ready for the increase. However, the National Assembly has made a move to stop the increase in electricity tariff from July 1. The National Assembly did this by convincing the Power Distribution Companies to postpone the enforcement of an increased tariff fo the first phase of 2021.

The reason for this intervention from the National Assembly is due to the fact that there is too much stress in the lives of Nigerians because of the economic challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. This was stated by the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan, who also said, “The agreement here is that there is not going to be any increase in the tariffs on July 1st. The Speaker and I, we are going to take appropriate action and meet with the President.

โ€œWe are in agreement here that there is no question on the justification of the increase but the time is simply not right and appropriate measures need to be put in place.”
