The Nigerian Communications Commission, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Henry Nkemmadu has told Nigerians to discard the rumours of the use of 5G in Nigeria. The Commission said that licenses have not yet been issued to network operators to use the 5G network in Nigeria.
The Commission also stated that there is no true and tested link whatsoever connecting the 5G network to the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria, and thus, Nigerians should be assured of the Commission’s discretion to ensure that only technological services which are beneficial to the people will be allowed to operate in Nigeria. As to the videos which circulated some time ago concerning the laying of fibre optic cables in Lagos state and other parts of the country, the Nigerian Communications Commission said the purpose of laying the cables is to further strengthen the 3G and 4G network available in the country.
He also said “NCC has not issued any licence for 5G in Nigeria and therefore the mobile network operators (MNOS) cannot switch on such technology. NCC is technology neutral as such we don’t license technology but assign spectrum to operators for deployment of any service when allocated by National Frequency Management Council (NFMC).
