Notorious Mexican drug lord, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera better known as “El Chapo” has escaped from prison today. El Chapo is the head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, popularly believed to be the most powerful drug cartel in the world.
Guzman was arrested in Guatemala in 1993 and was extradited to Music shortly afterwards. He broke out of Prison in a laundry cart in 2001 and eluded authorities until last year.
Guzman escaped again today through a hole in his cell floor. The hole in the cell led to a tunnel which was reported to be just a little over a kilometer long. An international manhunt has commenced for the druglord whom Time Magazine has thrice listed as one of the 100 most powerful men in the world.
He is known to have a network of tunnels and safe houses and if the first time he escaped is anything to go by, there is little hope that he will be apprehended by the authorities anytime soon.
